What is a Dental Implant?

Anyone who wants to replace missing teeth, is in reasonable good health and has enough bone in the area of the missing teeth can take an implant. Implants are used to anchor dentures, partials and single missing teeth.

A dental implant is a metal screw inserted into the jawbone. There, it acts as an anchor for one tooth or a set of false teeth.

Dental implants are most effective in the front of the lower jaw.  In general, success rates are in the 95% to 100% range. Not too much can go wrong with an implant. Problems that can arise are:

  • Failure to integrate properly with the bone
  • Fractures or breaks
  • Connection problems between the implant and the prosthesis
  • Infection

These complications are rare and can usually be easily corrected.
