John - Smile Makeover and Mouth Reconstruction
"I Can Not See My Upper Teeth. It Looks Like My Upper Teeth are Missing!"
John had a mouth reconstruction done well over a period of many years. But, many of his crowns were in his mouth for over 20 years and it was time to begin a replacement process. He had crowns on his upper teeth and his lower teeth were worn down with years of wear. He went to the dentist regularly and took good care of himself. Yet, it was difficult for him to show upper teeth during normal function or in photographs.
Is What Happened to John Normal?
Normal becomes a difficult word to use, but many people in their fifties, sixties and seventies have significantly worn down their teeth. As the teeth wear down, the face begins to collapse, as there is not enough tooth structure to support the face. Face length and lip support are the result of the height of the bite. Short bites yield to short faces and thin lips. As the bite is lengthened, the facial support is improved and the patient looks younger and more vibrant.

Grand Children can be Brutal!
Grandpa, where are your teeth? Grandpa, do you have teeth? Grandpa, why are your teeth so yellow? Yes, sometimes, grand children can be brutally honest when they see an aging face. John, is not the “Hollywood type of person” as he is concerned with his health, but he doesn’t’ want to look like an old man before his time. John discussed his options with Dr. Sam Muslin, as he wanted to know if his health and appearance could be achieved while replacing the necessary crowns.
Bite Stress and Facial Stress
Even though the teeth are healthy, the bite can contribute to facial, neck and lower back symptoms. Stress reduction is the key to a healthy life and when the teeth are worn down, stress can be a factor. John doesn’t know he has a lot of stress in his face but after the completion of his treatment, John has had his health improved significantly. His jaw is more comfortable, his health is ideal and he has a natural looking face and a younger appearance.
Bite Reconstruction vs Mouth Reconstruction
Both a bite reconstruction and a mouth reconstruction are essentially the same thing with just a different emphasis. The jaw is generally pushed back towards the ears called centric relation and the bite is idealized. Generally, the face is not addressed and the height of the bite is not increased. The focus is the reconstruction of the teeth and not the face.
