Teeth Whitening lightens the color of the teeth making them appear whiter. For most patients, this is the easiest and least expensive cosmetic dental enhancement.

We tend to look healthier and younger when our teeth appear white and not yellow or dark in color. As we age, teeth stains can get more intense. This is why many patients opt to have their teeth whitened.

Teeth Whitening Kits

There are many whitening kits and techniques on the market. These include BriteSmile, Zoom, Crest Whitening Strips and other over the counter drug store brands. However, in general, store bought solutions are not tailored to the individual. Therefore, they do not work as well as most people would like.

In fact, the TV series 20/20 did a test with 18 patients using a store bought kit. They found that after weeks of use, not a single one of the patients had whiter teeth. What was interesting was that many of the patients thought their teeth were whiter but the hosts of the program couldn't see any difference!

Custom Whitening

Because everyone has different levels of staining and tooth sensitivity, it's best that any whitening procedure be monitored by a dentist. The dentist can monitor the formula used. For example, there are "one strength treats all" methods that can cause extreme sensitivity for some patients—to the point where it's uncomfortable to breathe through the mouth!

When the right method is used, teeth whitening can make a noticeable difference and is worth the effort.
